Downingtown's Christmas Parade Lives on Lancaster Avenue, From Gable to Green

"The route is 1.4 miles long so keep that in mind if you plan to have young children walking!"

That warning comes from the 2026 parade rules and information packet published by Downingtown Good Neighbor Christmas, Inc. It's aimed at the people marching. It also tells spectators something useful. The Borough's online calendar lists Kerr Park on East Pennsylvania Avenue as the location for all three of the town's December-season events. Two of them really do happen in the park. The third, the Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 12, starts at the top of Gable Avenue, turns onto Lancaster Avenue and stops at Green Street.

So the holiday season here runs on three Saturdays in a row. The first two are park events with a clear center. The third is spread along a 1.4-mile route that runs from Gable Avenue down Lancaster Avenue, and your afternoon depends mostly on where along it you stand.

November 28: the season starts in Kerr Park

The Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is Saturday, November 28, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Kerr Park, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The Borough's listing links straight to the Downingtown Good Neighbor Christmas website, the same group that runs the parade. For anyone keeping track, the tree lighting is the start of a three-week stretch the group organizes, and the park is where it begins.

There's a smaller deadline the day before. Parade registration closes Friday, November 27, according to the 2026 packet. If your business, scout troop, dance studio or neighborhood group plans to march, the sign-up closes the night before the tree lights up. Entries can be walking or dance groups, vehicles or floats.

December 5: Santa at the Log House, a daytime event

The middle Saturday stays in the park and moves to daytime hours. Log House Santa, presented by the Borough's Historic Commission, runs Saturday, December 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Kerr Park. The Borough describes it simply: Santa will be waiting for visitors to tell him whether they've been naughty or nice and maybe request a special gift or two. Questions go to the Historic Commission at [email protected].

The four-hour window makes this the easiest of the three Saturdays to fit around other plans. A family can go before lunch, after lunch, or right in the middle.

December 12: the parade moves out to the avenue

The Borough calendar lists the Christmas Parade for 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 12. The organizers' packet shows how the afternoon builds up to that start time:

  1. 1:00 p.m. The staging area opens at Beaver Creek Elementary School, 601 W. Pennsylvania Avenue, and the surrounding streets. Participants are told not to arrive before 1 p.m.
  2. 1:45 p.m. Floats must be in staging, fully dressed.
  3. 2:00 p.m. Float judging begins, and all other participants must be on site. Prizes for the top three floats are awarded before the parade starts.
  4. 3:00 p.m. The parade steps off from the top of Gable Avenue, turns left onto Lancaster Avenue and runs to Green Street.

Several packet rules change what you'll see from the curb. It's a "forward moving" parade, and the organizers write that there is "absolutely no stopping to perform, or hand out candy." Parade marshals along the route keep groups moving. Nobody throws candy from the parade, though walkers may hand it out. Every vehicle has to be decorated except politicians' vehicles, antique vehicles and fire trucks. Only one Santa appears, the one the committee provides at the end. One rule is new for 2026: prizes go to the top three walking groups with the best Christmas or winter costumes, judged before the parade.

Last year's parade gives a sense of the lineup. 19335GO! described the 2025 parade as floats, bands, walking groups, dance groups, antique cars, local fire trucks and Santa Claus, with Charles "Bud" W. Bruton, Jr. serving as 2025 Grand Marshal.

Pick a block, then pick a table

Since the parade covers Lancaster Avenue from Gable to Green, every restaurant on that stretch is along the route. There are porta-potties in front of Beaver Creek School and at the end of the route. That puts the facilities at the west and east ends, so where you stand also decides how far you are from the nearest one.

Here's what sits on the avenue itself, grouped by side of town:

Stop Address What it serves Side of the route
Myrtos Restaurant 47 W. Lancaster Avenue Greek West
TacoMar 49 W. Lancaster Avenue Mexican tacos, including carnitas, chorizo and birria West
Anthony's Cucina Fresca 78 W. Lancaster Avenue Homestyle Italian, handcrafted pasta, cocktails West
Mother 202 E. Lancaster Avenue Tacos, margaritas, beer, empanadas East
East Branch Brewing Company 202 E. Lancaster Avenue, second floor Craft beer, food, cocktails, wine, cider East

On the west side, three restaurants sit almost next to each other. Myrtos at 47 and TacoMar at 49 are neighbors, and Anthony's Cucina Fresca is a short way up the avenue at 78. In October, 19335GO! profiled Anthony's, describing its Sicilian roots, homestyle cooking and handcrafted pasta. Because the parade comes in from Gable Avenue at the west end, this stretch sees it first.

On the east side, 202 E. Lancaster Avenue has two options at one address. Mother is on the street level, and East Branch Brewing Company is on the second floor. East Branch's posted hours run noon to 10 p.m. on Saturdays, with the kitchen open noon to 9. That means it's already serving when floats line up at Beaver Creek and still serving well after the parade's 5 p.m. listed end. The brewery asks guests to check its social media for holiday and weather changes, which makes sense on a December Saturday. Being on the east side also puts you close to Green Street, where the parade stops and the end-of-route porta-potties are.

Don't plan around ice cream. The Creamery at the Farmhouse, at 119 W. Lancaster Avenue, serves scoops, shakes and waffles in season, but its site currently says "Closed for the Season!"

There is no rain date

For anyone planning a December 12 gathering around the parade, this line in the packet matters most: "NO SNOW/RAIN DATE." The parade is canceled only if the police, public works and the committee decide conditions are unsafe. If the forecast looks marginal, you'll get either a cancellation or a parade in cold, wet weather. The day won't be pushed back a week.

That's another reason a table matters along this route. Last December, 19335GO!'s preview told spectators to arrive early and bundle up. A reservation on the west side or a seat upstairs at 202 E. Lancaster gives you somewhere warm before or after standing on the curb, and both are on the route.

Before the holiday Saturdays, one more Kerr Park morning

Before the holiday stretch, the Borough calendar lists one more Saturday farmers market at Kerr Park on October 31, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. That evening, Trick or Treat runs from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The market is run by Growing Roots and is held at Kerr Park, 60 E. Pennsylvania Avenue. The Borough calendar doesn't list any market dates after October 31, so the next Kerr Park event on the calendar is the tree lighting on November 28.

Here are the four Saturdays to put on the calendar, in order:

  • Saturday, October 31: Farmers Market at Kerr Park, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and Trick or Treat, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, November 28: Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Kerr Park, 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, December 5: Log House Santa at Kerr Park, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, December 12: Christmas Parade, Gable Avenue to Green Street along Lancaster Avenue, stepping off at 3:00 p.m.

Questions about marching or the route go to the organizers. The packet lists Dianne Plaugher at [email protected] or 484-678-6835, and Steve Plaugher at [email protected].
